We have been photographing San Francisco city hall elopements for over 14 years. This particular elopement occurred a couple of years ago and ended up being one of our most fun couples of that year. They really wanted to enjoy their wedding day at SF City Hall and I think it shows in the pictures. This is one of the key factors in successfully photographing eloping couples at this amazing wedding venue. You can tell by the wedding pictures and the expressions on the faces of the newlyweds that they were enjoying their day. We have photographed over 1,000 Elopements at SF City Hall!

As mentioned above, this was one of our favorite San Francisco city hall couples of 2024 because they were so much fun. They made the decision to elope for their city hall marriage to save money, but also to capture photos of the amazing architecture
at SF City Hall. Capturing candid images with this couple was so easy because they spent so much time laughing and joking around with each other. We love when our newlyweds do this but it's not absolutely necessary.
We can still obtain amazing Elopement images
even if our bride and groom are a bit more on the shy side. However, if you really want your final City Hall wedding pictures to show lots of personality you can help out by being animated yourself. Of course we will do whatever we can to make this easier for
you by making suggestions and encouraging you to have fun. Some of our clients prefer to take a more subtle approach and that's fine too. We always cater our SF city hall wedding photography to the personalities of our brides and grooms. You can also
feel free to let us know the type of style you're looking for and we will make sure and accommodate your wishes.
One of the things we like to do for our eloping couples when we photograph them at city hall is to give them some dramatic images to go along with some of the standard ones. Obviously the building itself gives us the opportunity to create images with impact just by aiming the camera in any direction it seems. This of course is due to the fantastic SF city hall architecture that you see in all directions when you are wandering through the building. However, when a bride and groom books us, they are looking for something more. Simply placing the couple in front of various City Hall backgrounds is not enough. So we bring professional lighting and off-camera flash units to help create a different look. By using a radio slave controlled flash we can make a photo like the ones you saw above in the City Hall elopement gallery.
Some of these images were photographed clear across the building with a remote flash placed behind this gorgeous bride. By balancing the light from our on-camera flash with the back-light, we were able to create professional photos that really enhance the bride's wedding dress. As you can see, the light coming through makes the veil and parts of the dress look partially transparent. This adds drama to the picture while creating a unique look that you will never see without remote lighting.
We are one of the few San Francisco City Hall photographers you will see wandering around the building carrying extra Professional lighting equipment. Don't worry, it's not some
embarrassingly large lighting unit with a huge umbrella. In fact, it's actually quite portable and relatively unobtrusive. If you want to tell the pros from the amateurs, check out their lighting systems. We have many friends who are top-notch SF
city hall elopement photographers at this amazing venue and almost all of them use off-camera lighting. We wouldn't dream of photographing a wedding any other way.
Using a light that is placed far away from the camera gives the photographs a professional
look and also more dimension and depth. We use various types of light shaping equipment, but mostly bounce our flash off of the neutral walls at SF City Hall. We love the soft light that this technique creates. In addition to the main light coming from this off-camera professional flash, the reflective light fills other areas
of the photos with softer light. We also frequently bounce our on-camera flash unit off of one of the many gray walls around the building. This really enhances the light by making it soft and elegant.
We are also aware that many City Hall elopement photographers feel like natural light is the only way to go. Well we agree that the natural light at SF City Hall is amazingly beautiful sometimes. The only problem is that is San Francisco can be foggy quite often. When this fog rolls in and take much of the interior city hall natural light with it. There are also some beautiful locations within the building that feature amazing architecture but have no natural light to speak of and are quite dark. With these locations, some sort of supplemental lighting is essential. This includes Mayors Balcony and certain parts of the Rotunda.
